Getting to the source of it

Ever been browsing the internet come across an amazing image and been so excited to see what else that photographer has done, or maybe it was a cool craft and want to see what other projects that blogger has made, but the photo only links back to another tumblr or another pinterest. UGH! right?

It's a really big problem on Tumblr especially, but now it's even become a problem on Pinterest and peoples personal blogs too. I know I've even come across my own photos on those places that weren't linked back to my blog – it's frustrating in a lot of ways. Then I came across a neat little trick to finding original sources thanks to our good friend google (and no… google did not ask me to write this!).

I've found it works about 50% of the time, so it's not full-proof, but I've come across some amazing blogs and websites by using this to source an image. Plus I feel a little like a detective. Okay, maybe not a great detective – but definitely a goofy P.I. like Gene Parmesean…

Sourcing images - Fine and Feathered Blog
(click the image to see it big, just in case you get lost!)

1// I start with whatever image I'm trying to source and right clicking to "view image"
2// I copy the link in the address bar for the image
3// I head over to google Image (there's a link for it at the top of the google homepage, right next to search) and click on the little camera icon next to the search button.
4// A new search bar pops up, I paste the link from the image into the search bar and click the "seach by image" button.
5// This page looks different depending on how easy it is for google to find the original source, but most of the time it has the image and a list of links. Apparently my image was of Hilary Walsh, however I stil couldn't find the original image on her website so I did a little more digging….
6// To look at other possible sources I clicked on the photo at the top
7// It takes you to a whole list of that image and all diferent websites that have posted it. After just a second of hovering my mouse over a few of them I saw that the third one was from the Tomboy Style blog, which I already knew was a great blog so I thought I'd give it a try…
8// BINGO! The original source and a whole blog post full of other lovely photos from the same shoot.

One more tip : Occasionally all the links that pop up are still from tumblr's and pinterest pages, but down at the bottom it has "similar images" and sometimes the actual image will be in there with the original link.

Maybe some of you already know this little trick – so good for you! But I've asked a few people I know and all of them said they had no idea there was a way to search for an image source so I thought I'd share! It really does only take a few seconds, and it can lead you to some amazing sites. I always try to include original sources when sharing images so I've taken to doing this a lot and I love it!

Playing with Food

Fine and Feathered Food Photography

I've loved baking and cooking since I was little. My mom always made chocolate chip cookies from scratch, so those were one of the first things I ever learned to make. When I was a teenager I got really into photography. Almost every weekend I was begging my sisters or parents to take me to a local band's show just so I could snap some photos. Even though my first blog was mostly about food, my love for photography and food never really crossed like I think I had hoped would happen naturally.

I do love sharing the occasional recipe on here when I come across something really good, but recently I was going through some of my old recipes and was really unhappy with the photos I had posted with most of them. I don't expect myself to be some amazing food stylist and photographer, but I've really just been plain old lazy about my food photos – sometimes just rushing myself through them even when I didn't have to.

One of my little goals this year is to really push myself with photography, and one of the things I already had in mind when making that goal was to really focus on improving my food photos. I love looking at food blogs with great photography, and even though this isn't a food blog, when I do share recipes I love I want to be able to convey to everyone how great it really is.

I was experimenting with making a little cocktail last night and the house was pretty quiet so I decided it was time for me to really spend some time experimenting with a little styling and photography on it. Of course, the cocktail actually didn't come out so well (much too strong, perhaps I'll tweak and maybe share a recipe when I work it out) but I feel like I really did learn a lot from spending a good half hour doing nothing but taking photos of it. For one of the first times I really brought in some "props", tried several different spots to play with lighting, and experimented with different angles. I took over 100 photos and the farther I got into looking at the photos, the better they really were (the ones up top are from the very end of my shooting). Now I'm really wandering why I never took this time before, why I've been so darn lazy!

I am certainly no Joy the Baker (and probably never will be), but I now realize how I need to do this more – slow down, think about things, experiment, and not afraid to try something new or different. Practice makes perfect – with everything, so why not dive in and have some fun?

Anyone else out there playing with food photography? Or really exploring any new area of photography!

I am pretty excited to share these photos I did last week of my beautiful friend Anna. Her and her husband are pregnant with their second (ah! I can't believe I'm old enough to have friends with kids – crazy!), a little girl that I'm sure will be just as gorgeous as her mamma. They live in Philly and I couldn't resist using the city for a backdrop and she was great enough to trek around with me.

I definitely think portraits are my favorite kind of photos to do. I used to do a lot of band/event photos when I was a teenager and had fun with that but got kind of bored, then I tried doing wedding for a little while and just didn't like it (although, oddly enough, loved the planning and design side of weddings). But portraits are really fun, you can kind of take your time and connect with people more.

Maybe it's that I don't have to worry about driving to work this winter, but I'm actually not dreading the snow like I normally do… Heck maybe I'll even go out and play in it:)
