Fine and Feathered

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! I really enjoyed it all this year, and I even got to see some old friend's I haven't seen in years yesterday, which was a nice treat. I made a lot of gifts this year but I really am excited to share my biggest accomplishments – the quilts I sewed for my neice and nephew! They are so far from perfect, but I really enjoyed making them with both of the kids in mind. My neice loves her girly things so I ended up going with various shades of pink, and my nephew loves pirates and the sea so I kept with a nautical theme. I just love making things with specific people in mind and trying to customize it for them. It just makes it so much more fun to make and give!

How was everyone else's holiday?

I finally got all my triangles cut out! I ended up ordering two fun fabrics from StashFabric to add some print to the monochromatic theme. And I couldn't resist the gold foxes! I had been thinking I wanted to do one really fun color to break up all the black, white, and grey and didn't know what until I came across it and just couldn't say no. After I got everything cut out I layed out my plan for the quilt on the floor. I did everything in "random" order but I'm glad I laid it all out first because I'm pretty sure I would have ended up with rows of just one or two fabrics if I didn't. I snapped a picture and printed it out so that I can cross off the squares I've done as I go along. It's nice. I spend about a half hour each night just sewing the squares together for each row, which makes me feel accomplished, but not like I'm overwhelming myself to get it all done at once. I've already learned quite a bit which I can hopefully put into another quilt in the future, but for right now I'm just concentrating on the one I have at hand:)

Anyone else making, or made, a quilt? Any tips?

So one of the projects I've had floating in the back of my mind for the last few months is a quilt! I always was kind of intrigued by quilts, but always thought they weren't "my style". But then I started thinking about how you can make them in any colors and patterns, so how could they not be my style? So I've been searching out some inspiration lately and am really excited! I've been practicing with scrap fabric I had laying around and just started buying fabric for the big one this week. I even was inspired and made some pillows too (maybe I'll share some photos later this week? ;). I'm really lucky too because my grandmother is a great quilter!

I'm thinking that for my big quilt I'm going to stay simple for my first one and just do triangles in mostly greys, blacks, and whites, and maybe throw a color in there too. I've been really pushing myself to just do this year – so I haven't been letting myself put off starting this, and am promising myself to just relax and enjoy it, and not go crazy when it's not totally perfect. So I'll be sharing little bits of my progress here on the blog as another way to push myself into making sure I actually finish it!

Anyone else starting any new big projects, or have you ever made a quilt before?
