Stay a While, Summer.

Summer is already  F L Y I N G  by. I just want to hold onto it for dear life. We are working on the house in full force, trying to get as much done this summer as we can. Peronsonally, I'm looking to make some big changes too, and my head seems to constantly be swimming with thoughts about them.

You may have noticed I took a little hiatus from blogging after I went on vacation. I was feeling overwhelmed by a lot of different things, and honestly, just not myself. I also was testing to see if I do want to continue blogging. I lost a lot of my audience after my domain problems, and it seems a lot of bloggers are quitting these days too. Then, I laid in bed the other night and realized I missed it. I miss it pushing me to try new things and stay creative. I miss how my blog has helped to teach me new things and improve old.

So, I will be back. Soon.

Goal Talk

Fine and Feathered

Even though it often feels that New Years goals are cliche and overdone, I still kind of love them! I'm all for making goals and getting starting any time of the year, and New Years goals feel so natural, that I can't count myself out of the millions making new (and sometimes old) promises to myself. Especially after the utter insanity that December brings, January feels like the perfect time to start fresh. Everything slows down, and you can take time to breathe, relax, and really think about what you want the next twelve months of your life to be like.

This past fall I gave myself two goals that I completely lost focus of over the holidays, and I'm excited to get back to. They're both pretty common ones in ways, but both are things that I enjoy doing (if I can just get myself to do them) and benifit me (maybe not financially or anything, but more on a personal level). So here they are : Exercise, and blog. Groundbreaking, right?

I'm trying to be more mindful to not set my goals too high. Just like I know I wouldn't be able to climb Everest this year, why would I make any other goals for myself that I know are not realistic for me at this point in my life? I don't expect myself to exercise for an hour every day, or blog five times a week. If I were to expect that from myself, I would be setting myself up for failure in a big way, there's just no way I could keep up with that on top of my work and personal life. I've always been really tough on myself, and would usually expect myself to accomplish these huge goals and then beat myself up for it, and usually end up quitting altogether because of it. In the end, setting those goals just ended up being a negative experience.

This past year though, I've been working on giving myself realistic goals and trying to celebrate small wins. I'm goaling myself at exercising and blogging twice a week. But say, I have a crazy, hard week? I should still pat myself on the back if I only did those things once. That's not to say it should be a pattern, but I'm trying harder to not kick myself when I'm down, because that's when I'm always tempted to just stop altogether.

I also have one more little goal I just came up with on NYE, and that is to start journaling agian. I used to love journaling. I actually have a huge box filled with journals from when I was a teenager. I've been really wanting to sharpen my writing skills, and journaling is such a natural way to do that. I was definitely hugely inspired by Elise's last podcast with Crystal Moody. I love how she wanted to be better at drawing, and thought that if she had a nice big stack of drawings at the end of the year then there would most likely be at least a couple good ones in there. I love that! Practice makes perfect, and I think as an adult I tend to forget that.

What are some goals you're setting for yourself this year, or maybe are still working on?

Feels like forever since I really blogged. I have my own cliche goals post for tomorrow, but for today, I thought it might just be fun to share some random things I'm into, and whatnot!

Currently listening to… That goes back and forth between anything Serial related (oh yes, I'm on that bandwagon!) and a music mix I had made around Thanksgiving that I'm still loving. It's kind of random, but one that's been on repeat for me recently is "Shake it out" by Florence and the Machine (an oldie but a goodie).

Currently reading… UGH! I'm in the middle of so many books right now and I've just been too busy and stessed during the holidays to really read any, but for Christmas my sister got me "The Creative Habbit" by Twyla Tharp and I am so excited to dig into it!

Currently feeling… excited for a new year and to finally slow down after the craziness of the holidays.

A few random bits of what I've been up to lately…

– How is November nearly gone? I can't believe we're only a week from Thanksgiving! I'm so excited though, I get to host Thanksgiving brunch again this year, which I loved doing last year!

– Been trying to get back into a blogging rhythm. I'm trying to be realistic, but also challenge myself. Obviously, blogging every day like I did at one point would be insane with my full time job and long commute, so I'm shooting for twice a week. Sounds reasonable right?

– Has anyone started their Christmas shopping or crafting? I swore this year I'd get it all done before Thanksgiving, and here I am, having only bought one gift so far! oops. On a happy note, our store is looking so pretty and festive, it's really been getting me in the mood!

– I'll admit that I've joined the crowd and gotten completely addicted to Serial. It's the perfect thing to listen to on my commute, the time just flys by. I also adore Elise's podcast!

How is everyone else's November's going?

Away in the Woods

An afternoon spent wandering through the woods, laughing, and looking for a little adventure, is always a favorite way to spend a Sunday. Throw in a campfire, and enough s'mores to make any normal person sick, and you have our lovely day. As soon as I saw the Free People October catalgue I was obsessed, to say the least. I couldn't wait to do a little photoshoot with some of the girls from the store, inspired by it!

We spent the afternoon wandering through the city park near my home, just shooting and enjoying the lovely fall day. I always love getting a bit lost in the woods, not really knowing what you'll find, but appreciating all the sights and smells it has to offer.

Once we were done in the woods we headed over to my dad's warehouse. It's an old brick bulding that sits in a field, surrounded by woods. My dad was nice enough to set us up a fire, and even pitched in a box of cupcakes to ensure that we were fat and happy when we were all done shooting. My favorite part of the whole day was the very end, where we all got to sit back, relax, and appreciate the star filled night sky and the warm, crackling fire. It's made me realize how desperately I need to take more time like that in my life.
