WE HAVE A HOUSE

May 12, 2013 § 5 Comments

We have a home!! We had our offer accepted earlier this week and I wanted to wait until it was 100% sure so I didn't jinx it, but we signed the papers today and are pretty darn excited! Oddly enough it's the first house we ever looked at. It seems kind of silly to end up back in that first house, but we really do feel it's the perfect place for us right now.

Obviously I can barely wait to get in there and get started the work we need to do on it as soon as possible. But it's the real world, so I have to wait patiently and try not to obsess over it while paper work gets done, but I can't promise I won't spend the majority of my free time day dreaming about it:)

Tea Cart Makeover

I have been keeping my eyes out for a cute cart for a while now. I really love all the bar carts I've been seeing around the web, but since I only drink socially and my husband doesn't drink the whole idea of a bar cart doesn't really work for us, but I love love love tea. So I've been wanting to make myself a whole tea cart! I figued I can keep all my hot tea stuff and some snacks on it during the winter and add stuff for ice teas when summer comes around. And I finally found the perfect cart for it!

Though, it was a little rough when I first found it…

Kinda nasty, right? It was tagged for $15 but I got them to come down to $10 since it needed some rehab (yay for a little bargaining!). So I disasembled it, cleaned all the peices really well and sanded the tops just a bit before doing several light coats of universal spray paint (I like Rustoleom). I debated whether or not to change the color but realized I really like how industrial it looks. It kind of reminds me of something you'd find in a hospital or something!

I love collecting tins from thrift stores and my favorites are these little vintage tea-tins I keep all my tea bags in (I'd love to get back to loose leaf tea but have been really lazy lately). I'm also keeping my eyes open for a cute tea pot since I have a hand-me-down electric kettle that's a little…ugly. So I figure I'd keep that in the kitchen until I find a nice one to show off.

For those wondering the feather mugs were a gift (they're from Target) and I believe I got the black mugs at Marshalls a few years ago. The DIY for the herringbone tray can be found here.

I got my new lens in the mail today! Woo! I'm pretty darn in love with it (it's a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4) and have been running around the house all afternoon snapping pictures like I'm thirteen years old and stealing my mom's camera, like I used to do. I thought I'd share a few:)

Simple Burlap Table Runner

A couple months ago I was wandering through Pottery Barn and fell in love with a lovely little fall table they had set up with all sorts of beautiful pumpkins and pretty little plates and what-not and it was all tied together with this cute and simple burlap table runner that went right down the middle. I quickly had a little light-bulb moment and thought about how easy it'd be to make one, customize it, and save like, thrity dollars. Oh yes, love it. Of course, our dining table is round so it hung a little funny, but it ended up being perfect for our buffet/dresser that's also in the dining room.

Supplies : Burlap (measure your table to figure out the right size for you), stencils (you can find these at most craft stores in a variety of fonts and sizes), acrylic or all-purpose craft paint, foam brush

Cut your burlap to size and using your stencils (it's best to start from your middle letter and work your way out) and use your foam brush to dab the paint on until it's filled. Allow to dry – enjoy:)

Fall Fabric Garland

This year I've had a little bit of an itch to do a little decorating for the fall! I decided to quickly whip up a little garland to hang with the flower one I made last year. I hate throwing away fabric scraps that I think I might even possibly be able to use, so I've been keeping all the long strips of leftover fabric in a zippy bag for an occasion such as this. Fabric garlands are fun and they add a little bit of pattern and color to a space, plus they're as easy as tying on long strips of fabric to a bit of yarn!
